The Valls Town Council hosted an institutional event to pay tribute to the city's first democratic council, established on April 19, 1979. This commemoration, part of the Pau Nuet Year 2026, brought together council members who served on that historic council, fulfilling a motion approved by the Municipal Plenary on March 30.
The event began with a musical performance featuring cello and voice. Subsequently, the mayor, Dolors Farré, welcomed attendees, and a series of photographs from the first term of Mayor Pau Nuet were projected.
Following the projection, several council members from the first democratic council spoke, including Lluís Anglés Miró, Rosa Maria Prats Salas, Joan Domènec Vilanova, and Enric Ribé Robusté.
The ceremony served to highlight the significance of that first democratic council and to champion the role of Pau Nuet as a key figure in the restoration of local institutions and the consolidation of democracy in Valls.
The contribution of Pau Nuet i Fàbregas, the first mayor of the democratic era after the municipal elections of March 3, 1979—the first since the end of Franco's regime—was emphasized. Nuet, who passed away ten years ago, took office on April 19, 1979, leading the socialist group, which secured six council seats, ahead of CiU (5), PSUC (3), Centristes de Catalunya (2), and ERC (1).
During his first term (1979-1983), Nuet promoted institutional recovery and the modernization of local government. He was re-elected mayor in 1983, achieving an absolute majority for the PSC in Valls for the first time, and was invested mayor for a third consecutive term in 1987. His tenure concluded after the 1991 elections, when the number of council seats increased and the PSC lost its majority, at which point Nuet resigned his council seat.
The event concluded with the presentation of a recognition to the attending council members and to the families of those council members who are no longer present.
