In Empordà, as in many other areas of Catalonia, a feeling of exhaustion has settled among the population stemming from the gap between political rhetoric and actual governance. The criticism focuses on the tendency of governments to make “big words and solemn promises” that fail to yield tangible results.
The most striking example is the housing crisis. Despite annual promises to increase the housing stock, the reality shows that the needs of families, young people, and workers are not being met. This situation forces many young people in Empordà to leave their hometowns due to uncontrolled price increases and lack of supply.
The Empordà does not need more well-spoken speeches. It needs fewer words and more actions. It needs governments that say what they can do and do what they say. Because governing is not speaking well. It is delivering.
This dynamic of “promising much and delivering little” not only affects housing but also extends to the tax burden on workers and businesses, and the quality of public services. Emphasis is also placed on the feeling that many decisions are made without adequately listening to the needs of the territory.
Other issues causing concern include immigration, which is considered necessary but poorly managed, and security, which has shifted from a distant topic to a growing worry for residents who simply ask to live peacefully. There is hope that the year 2026 will mark a shift towards prioritizing “realities” over “empty words.”
