The Basses de l’Albera (Albera Ponds), located at the foot of the Albera Massif, have recovered their water level thanks to the recent precipitation. This improvement coincides with the installation of new informative signs by the Societat Catalana d’Herpetologia (Catalan Herpetology Society). This action is part of subsidies aimed at managing protected natural spaces without a specific governing body.
This set of small ponds is mainly fed by phreatic water and is characterized by its dystrophic waters, which are rich in humic compounds. This chemical composition contributes to the creation of very special and unique ecosystems within the Catalan territory.
The site is vital for biodiversity conservation. The lagoons host diverse flora and fauna, including species that are very rare in Catalonia. Furthermore, the Basses de l’Albera is the only natural location in Catalonia where the plant Marsilea strigosa is present.
The area also plays a crucial role in the migratory routes crossing the Pyrenees, offering an essential refuge and resting point for migratory birds passing through the cork oak forest zone.
