The infrastructure, which involved an investment of 700,000 euros from Next Generation funds, is located on land acquired by the council that was historically part of a large wetland area. The system is supplied by a pipeline connected to the Empuriabrava wastewater treatment plant, ensuring the sustainability of water resources in the face of potential drought.
The project aims to reach a depth of 20 to 30 centimeters in the coming weeks. The area is expected to be fully operational by autumn, although the local administration plans to host activities during the upcoming local festival in August.
In addition to its tourism function to revitalize the historic center, the initiative has a strong environmental focus. The 9-hectare site includes facilities for bird watching and bat nesting boxes, intended to promote biodiversity and facilitate the establishment of amphibian and bird species in the area.
