The controversy arises from the protocol signed last July between the state, regional, and local administrations, which focused strictly on the railway sector. CUP Councillor Xavier Colomer cited the response from the Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, confirming that the protocol did not include any specific plans for the bus station.
“"This response demonstrates that the future of the bus service in Figueres was not taken into account when planning the suppression of the Figueres train station. The only motivation is public works and urban speculation."
Mayor Jordi Masquef defended the plan, which involves removing the station from Joan Reglà street —an area he considers "boxed in" and difficult for coaches to access— to build a new one at the end of Progrés street. Masquef stressed that "what was valid in the eighties is no longer valid now."
Minister Paneque argued that although the protocol is railway-focused, the remodeling will require reinforcing intermodality with the bus service at the Figueres-Vilafant station. The Government's goal is a bus station in the city center, combined with a "satellite station" at the intermodal hub.
