The Animal Welfare Area of the Llançà City Council has launched the "Llançà nidifica" initiative to contribute to the protection of urban avifauna. The project will install nest boxes in natural areas of the municipality to favor the nesting of cavity-nesting birds, thereby promoting natural insect control and improving environmental quality. The official presentation is scheduled for after the summer.
This initiative is based on collaboration between the City Council, environmental entities, educational centers, citizens, and scientific organizations such as the Institut Català d’Ornitologia, through the Nius.cat platform. This network of alliances aims to pool efforts and knowledge to create a participatory and sustainable long-term project.
The project highlights the privileged environment of Llançà, with its proximity to the sea, diverse habitats, and green areas, making it ideal for numerous bird species. "Llançà nidifica" aims to improve nesting conditions, increase knowledge of local biodiversity, involve residents and tourists in citizen science and awareness, and position the municipality as a benchmark for sustainability.
It has been observed that common species such as tits or sparrows face difficulties in establishing themselves and raising their broods, which impoverishes local biodiversity and reduces their environmental benefits. The project seeks to reverse this trend.
The project is structured into six action blocks. The first includes the creation of urban nesting areas with the installation of approximately 30 nest boxes designed for small cavity-nesting birds in locations such as Plaça de Catalunya, Pineda del Port, Plaça de l'Església, and the City Council gardens, among others. Continuous monitoring will be carried out to record occupancy data and reproductive success.
The second block consists of creating an educational Route "Llançà nidifica" with information panels and QR codes. The third block integrates the project into citizen science initiatives, linking to the ICO's Nius.cat application for real observation data entry. The fourth block plans the creation of thematic artistic murals in strategic urban spaces.
The fifth block is dedicated to educational activities for schools, including talks, nest box construction workshops, and bird observation outings. The sixth block includes activities open to the general public. These actions aim to strengthen the bond between students and the local population with the natural heritage of Llançà.
The project's implementation will improve the conservation of urban avifauna, increase biodiversity, raise public awareness, generate an educational and tourist resource, and position Llançà as a leading municipality in sustainability, also contributing to Catalan and European scientific projects.
The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting healthy urban environments, connection with nature, environmental education, and a greener municipal model. It also encourages responsible consumption and strengthens the environmental resilience of the urban environment through more balanced and functional ecosystems.
