The Government has initiated the process to expand the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, and an environmental organization has submitted a proposal to incorporate fifteen new areas into the boundary.

The proposal seeks to overcome the current fragmentation of the protected area. The environmental organization argues that the expansion should not just be a sum of hectares, but a strategy to connect separated sectors, restore degraded zones, and strengthen resilience against the climate crisis.
Among the suggested areas are wetlands around Riumors, Siurana, and la Coromina, as well as spaces of great value for birdlife and threatened flora. Crops between Castelló d'Empúries and Empuriabrava are also included, acting as essential ecological connectors.
The list of proposed spaces is completed by the Fluvià river meander in Torroella de Fluvià, the Rubina marshes, and various historical hydraulic systems. Furthermore, there is a request to protect the marine environment linked to the Natura 2000 Network to preserve seagrass meadows.
