The discovery occurred on the morning of May 13, 2026, when police officers detected a suspicious vehicle in a rest area of the highway, near Figueres. Upon approach, a man fled the car and got into a second vehicle, driven by another individual, with both escaping southbound.
Following the escape, officers inspected the abandoned vehicle, a Porsche Cayenne with French license plates, which was found open and without keys. Inside, they found documentation that could belong to one of the fugitives, a man in his thirties. A search of the trunk revealed two bags containing a dozen AK-74 assault rifles.
The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of Girona has taken charge of the investigation to determine the identity of the fugitives, as well as the origin and destination of the weapons. Forensic police are analyzing the rifles to verify if they are operational and if they have been used in previous criminal activities. The vehicle and the confiscated weapons have been transferred to the facilities of the Figueres Basic Police Area for fingerprinting and further evidence collection.
“"An increase in the presence of long-barreled weapons has been detected in operations related to marijuana plantations and organized crime networks."
This discovery aligns with recent warnings about the increase in firearms in organized crime. A few days prior, during the Dia de les Esquadres of the Girona police region, a Mossos commissioner had already alerted to this trend, especially in cases linked to marijuana plantations and criminal networks.
