The mobilization of the Catalan agricultural sector against the Mercosur agreement and the precarization of farming received a significant boost in Alt Empordà when dozens of neighbors gathered at the AP-7 blockade in Pontós. The protest coinciding with the weekend facilitated this influx of citizen support.
“"What reaches us as consumers must be quality, and this can only be guaranteed when the products are local."
To maintain morale and energy, the demonstrators organized a communal lunch where a fideuá was cooked for 300 people. Many attendees were not farmers but residents from nearby municipalities like Navata who wanted to advocate for local product consumption.
“"It is a shame that the primary sector is not politically defended, just as education and other services should also be defended."
Other participants, such as Albert, warned that the crisis in the primary sector is a collective problem that could affect other labor groups, such as the self-employed, in the medium and long term. Support even extended to neighbors who took the opportunity to exercise, like Jordi from Orriols, who arrived by bicycle.
