The Bombers de la Generalitat (Catalan Firefighters) warn of the danger of domestic fires caused by chimneys and stoves during winter, offering key prevention tips and action protocols.

The emergency service has highlighted the danger posed by the malfunctioning of chimneys, fireplaces, and stoves during the cold months. Therefore, prevention focuses on the annual cleaning of the chimney flue, which must be done at least once a year to prevent the accumulation of soot and tar.
Among the additional safety measures, installing a smoke detector in the home is recommended, and avoiding burning treated or resinous wood, as these can accumulate more soot or tar, increasing the risk of obstruction and fire. It is also crucial that the room has adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of toxic gases.

In case of fire, it is essential to immediately call 112 and close all possible doors, as smoke represents the main danger to people.

Regarding the evacuation protocol, the Firefighters stress that if the staircase is full of smoke, the safest option is to stay inside the home with the door closed. If there is no smoke, one should exit, close the door, and descend via the stairs, always avoiding the use of the elevator or going up to the roof.
Before going to sleep or leaving home, the fire must be checked to ensure it is completely extinguished, or a spark screen should be used. Finally, they advise keeping the fireplace away from highly combustible materials such as plastics, wood, carpets, or any other type of fabric.
