The new focus, the eighteenth detected in Catalonia, has been located at an extensive livestock farm in Capmany, in the Alt Empordà region. According to the Department of Agriculture, the herd was not fully immunized, which has forced the sacrifice of all 106 bovine animals.
“"If the obligation is to vaccinate, then that vaccination must be enforced."
Raquel Serrat, coordinator of Unió de Pagesos, regretted the situation and harshly criticized the administration for failing to ensure that all animals in the region received the vaccine. She pointed out that, although the farmer may have had difficulties gathering the extensive livestock, the responsibility for control lies with the veterinarians responsible for the vaccination.
Following this new case, restrictions will be reapplied to farms located within a 30-kilometer radius of the outbreak for a minimum of 45 days. This measure affects municipalities that had lifted restrictions on December 26 or were expecting to do so on January 8, such as those in the Castelló d'Empúries area.
The first case of dermatosis was detected on October 3 in Castelló d'Empúries. So far, the disease had affected 17 farms, mostly in Alt Empordà, and resulted in the sacrifice of over 2,500 cattle. Agriculture has set January 31 as the deadline for immunizing all unvaccinated livestock.
