The Town Council of Pau has informed residents about the detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquitoes of the species Culex pipiens in the Les Closes d’en Mornau area, according to communications from the Girona Health Protection Service.

The confirmation followed the detection of a case in a horse on October 9, 2026, and subsequently, mosquito samples captured on October 14 at the La Torre farm, which also tested positive for WNV. The Department of Health has requested strengthening preventive measures to reduce the risk of new cases, especially for those living in or frequenting the area within a 1 km radius of the farm.
The Town Council has responded to the request from Girona's Health Protection Service, reporting on the control and prevention measures applied, and is coordinating actions with Public Health and the Mosquito Control Service of the Mancomunitat Badia de Roses i Baix Ter. Efforts are being made to ensure the preventive and corrective measures indicated in the entomological report are implemented.
Recommendations for citizens include avoiding bites by using mosquito nets, long-sleeved clothing, and repellents, as well as eliminating stagnant water sources outdoors. In case of a bite, it is recommended to wash and disinfect the area, and if symptoms such as high fever or intense headache occur, to contact a health center or 061 Salut Respon.
For more information, consult the recommendations from the Agència de Salut Pública de Catalunya, call 012 or 061 Salut Respon, or contact the Pau Town Council at 972 530 058 or ajuntament@pau.cat. The Town Council will continue to provide updates via its municipal website.
