Vilafranca en Comú is set to present a motion at the January plenary session to establish the Municipal Council for Children and Adolescents, reiterating a proposal unanimously approved in 2017 that remains unimplemented.

Councillor Montse Romagosa explained that the main goal of the Vilafranca en Comú (VeC) proposal is to foster youth participation and encourage the exercise of their rights. Furthermore, it seeks to allow their opinions to contribute to making Vilafranca del Penedès a more educational and humane town.

"The more a territory is known, the more it is felt as one's own, and counting on the involvement of all citizens contributes to building a more democratic, humane, accessible, friendly, and welcoming municipality."

Romagosa recalled that VeC had already presented a motion with the same principle in 2017, which was unanimously approved by the municipal plenary. However, the group regrets that since then “no step has been taken by the City Council to move forward in this direction,” which is why they insist on its constitution.

"In a moment of crisis of credibility of democratic systems like the current one, expanding citizen participation on all fronts can be an antidote."

Ramon Arnabat · President of Vilafranca en Comú
The president of Vilafranca en Comú, Ramon Arnabat, added that involving children and adolescents in the town's important decisions is an essential strategy to consolidate democratic awareness and guarantee local democracy, one of the commitments of the local government.
