Vall de Boí, in Alta Ribagorça, will be the site of an innovative project to combat the effects of climate change. The initiative, driven by the Department of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition, will focus on improving protection against torrential rains and other extreme phenomena.
Actions will be carried out in three ravines within the municipality: Remediano, Arenys, and Ribampietro. The goal is to reduce the vulnerability of population centers exposed to hydrometeorological risks, leveraging natural processes to protect residents and enhance the territory's adaptation capacity.
This pioneering project is supported by funding from the Generalitat's Climate Fund, with 291,593.76 euros, and the European project Life Pyrenees4Clima, contributing 276,673.72 euros, for a total budget of 568,267.48 euros for the 2026-2028 period.
The works will be complemented by outreach and awareness activities for the local population, including informative sessions and workshops on planting techniques. These efforts build upon previous work such as the creation of a forest species nursery and school workshops.
The initiative is part of the European program Life Pyrenees4Clima, led by the Consortium of the Working Community of the Pyrenees (CTP) and the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory (OPCC), aiming to accelerate climate change adaptation in the Pyrenean region.
Vall de Boí already has experience with nature-based solutions, as demonstrated by the Phusicos project in the Erill la Vall ravine, which helped reduce the risk of landslides and debris flows associated with intense rainfall.
