Through this adherence, the Argençola council underscores the importance of the elderly collective in the social and community fabric, arguing that aging should be linked to dignity, rights, and active participation.
The manifesto highlights that in Catalonia, older persons constitute over 20% of the population, more than 1.6 million citizens, and demands that this reality be central to public policies. Key demands include a sustainable public pension system, the eradication of poverty in old age, guaranteed universal and quality care for dependency, and a direct fight against ageism, invisibility, and the digital divide.
Furthermore, emphasis is placed on strengthening community networks to combat unwanted loneliness and asserting the right of older persons to remain active participants in decisions affecting their lives. A specific call is also made to address the inequalities faced by older women, who are more exposed to precariousness and violence.
This initiative is supported by numerous social, trade union, academic, and institutional entities from across Catalonia, including the Associació Ciutadana pels Drets de les Dones, Associació per la Cooperació Desenvolupament de la Dona, Associació per la Defensa de la Gent Gran of Barcelona, Associació SomSeniors, ASJUBI40, ATP–UGT FICA de Catalunya, Catalunya en Comú, Clínica Jurídica Dret al Dret de les Persones Grans, the Advisory Council for Older Persons of the Barcelona City Council, the Council for Older Persons of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), CONEX, the Diputació de Barcelona, ERC, FATEC, the Federation of Pensioners and Retirees of CCOO de Catalunya, Fundació FiraGran, Junts per Catalunya, the Observatory for Equal Treatment and Opportunities of Catalonia, PSC, PUGG.CAT, the Table for Older Persons of Sant Andreu (Barcelona), the Union of Retired and Pensioned Women of UJP-UGT, and the Municipal Network of Centers for Older Persons of Barcelona.
