The Banc de Sang i Teixits launched the Catalonia Blood Donors Marathon, taking place in Manresa and over a hundred municipalities from January 8 to 17, seeking 200 local donations and 10,000 regionally.

The fixed headquarters of the Banc de Sang i Teixits in Manresa, located at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, has set a goal of achieving 200 donations during the ten-day campaign. This Saturday, January 10, the façade of the Manresa City Hall will be illuminated red to show support for the solidarity initiative, along with a hundred other emblematic buildings across Catalonia.
In addition to the fixed location, a mobile unit will be set up on January 17 in the Plaça de Neus Català i Pallejà, operating from 10 am to 2 pm. Appointments can be booked for both the mobile unit and the fixed center, where donations are accepted on January 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15 during morning and afternoon hours.
The marathon, themed "The link that makes us immense," is held annually in the second week of the year to restore blood reserves, which typically drop by about 20% during the Christmas holidays. In Catalonia, over 240,000 annual donations are needed to cover hospital requirements.
Currently, the patient group requiring the most transfusions is those suffering from cancer, utilizing one in three donations (34%). Diseases of the digestive system (15.5%) and cardiovascular diseases (12.3%) follow in importance. The average age of blood recipients is around 73 years old.
