A young man from Avinyó, in the Bages region, is captivating millions of TikTok users with videos that reimagine traditional Catalan songs, such as "El cargol treu banya," featuring a clear anti-racist and anti-xenophobic message.

The videos by Naim Smaili, a 22-year-old resident of Avinyó, have gone viral on the TikTok platform, accumulating 1.7 million views. In them, Smaili and his friends perform Catalan children's classics over urban music beats, altering the lyrics to include anti-racist and humorous messages. One example is his rendition of "El cargol treu banya" (The snail shows its horn), which begins with a conversation about a supposed crime committed by a person of Moroccan origin.
Smaili, who works as a security guard and considers content creation a "hobby," has expressed surprise at the success of his videos. His primary goal is to combat stereotypes and xenophobia through humor, demonstrating that "not everyone is the same" and that most people "come to contribute and earn a living."
The young man, born into a family of Moroccan descent, uses characters and songs deeply rooted in Catalan culture, such as Patufet, "El plou i fa sol" (It rains and it's sunny), or "El Joan Petit quan balla" (Little Joan dances), to subvert negative stereotypes directed at the Maghrebi community. He initially feared negative reactions but has found that most viewers have responded positively and with humor.
The creation of the songs, often improvised inside his car, aims to transform "boring" traditional tunes into "much more lively" versions suitable for local festivals. Although he previously posted in Spanish, the success of his Catalan videos has prompted him to focus on this language, which he considers "the language I think, sing, and speak with my friends."
With some performances already booked and contacts from producers, Smaili sees potential for his songs to become "the summer hit." He has already professionally produced "Cargol, treu banya" in a studio and plans versions of other classics like "El sol solet" (The little sun) or "El gegant del pi" (The pine giant), while also working on original tracks, including a summer love song.
Despite his passion for music, Smaili prefers not to risk his current job as a security guard, although he would be open to pursuing music professionally if opportunities solidified.
