The staging of a new international petanque championship in Cambrils aims to de-seasonalize the municipality's tourist activity. The event, scheduled from October 18th to 24th at Parc del Pescador, will bring together 154 participants from countries such as France, Switzerland, Spain, and Morocco.
Organized by Team Challenge Pétanque Passion in collaboration with the Cambrils City Council, the Tourism Board, and local hotel establishments, the championship will combine sport, tourism, community, and discovery of the territory. France will have the largest representation, with players from 13 departments and 7 regions.
The program will commence on Sunday, October 18th, with the presentation of participants. Between October 19th and 23rd, 415 matches for men's, women's, and mixed teams will be played. The awards ceremony and closing will be held on Friday afternoon, October 23rd, with participants departing on Saturday, the 24th.
The Mayor of Cambrils, Oliver Klein, the Councilor for Tourism, Patricia de Miguel, and the head of Challenge Pétanque Passion, Mickael Boureau, among other representatives, have presented the championship, which aims for long-term consolidation. Klein highlighted that the event strengthens tourist activity in October and creates opportunities for the sector, linking petanque to the municipality's tourism history.
The Councilor for Tourism emphasized that the championship contributes to de-seasonalizing the tourist season and attracting a respectful visitor profile. The presence of French and Swiss participants enhances Cambrils' international projection, a municipality focused on family, gastronomic, and sports tourism.
Mickael Boureau explained that the organization seeks to popularize petanque outside of France, combining competition with tourism, gastronomy, and culture. Parc del Pescador has been identified as a particularly suitable venue for the competition.
Participants will be accommodated at the Hotel Sol Port Cambrils and Hotel Port Eugeni, boosting the event's tourism impact. Hotel representatives agreed on the value of such initiatives for strengthening the Cambrils brand and extending tourist activity throughout the year.
