The city of Reus is gearing up to observe one of the most anticipated astronomical phenomena of the year: a total solar eclipse, taking place this Wednesday, August 12. Given the forecast for considerable mobility, the City Council has activated a special plan and urges citizens to plan their journeys, prioritize public transport, and minimize private vehicle use.
The solar eclipse in Reus will begin at 7:35 PM. The totality phase will start at 8:29 PM, lasting approximately one minute, and the phenomenon will conclude at 9:21 PM.
An observation point has been set up at the vacant lot next to the Parc de la Festa, opening its doors at 5:00 PM. It is recommended to arrive early and bring certified eclipse glasses. 5,000 pairs of certified solar filter glasses will be distributed while supplies last. For space and circulation reasons, access with umbrellas, large chairs, or pets will not be permitted. The area will feature restrooms, food trucks, children's and family activities, and music. Although the planned capacity has been reached, visitors are encouraged to find other vantage points in the city.
To check visibility from home, it is suggested to observe the Sun's altitude on August 10 and 11 at 8:30 PM. Mobile applications like Eclipse 2.0 can also help verify the phenomenon's visibility.
To facilitate travel to the observation point, walking, taking the bus, or using the public bicycle service Ganxeta is recommended. A special bus line, L82, has been established, connecting Plaça de les Oques with the municipal pools between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM with a 10-minute frequency. Line 20 will also provide access to the area. Both lines will reinforce their service until 10:50 PM for the return journey. The use of Ganxeta bicycles will be extended between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
Private vehicles can use the parking facilities at Parc de la Festa, Doctor Ferran, Doctor Vilaseca, les Oques, and la Pastoreta. The Agro-Reus parking is particularly recommended to avoid congestion around the Parc de la Festa. The parking at Avinguda de Riudoms will open at 2:00 PM. The City Council may close Avinguda de Riudoms depending on the influx of vehicles.
The City Council emphasizes the importance of eye protection. Certified solar filter glasses (standard ISO 12312-2) must be used. Regular sunglasses are insufficient. Only during the minute of totality can one look at the Sun without protection. Specific solar filters are required for cameras or telescopes. It is also warned that looking at the Sun while driving can lead to accidents and severe eye injuries.
