The activity, which will take place every Monday at 5 PM at the Centre Cultural del Delta, is designed to be simple and participatory, linking sign language learning with reading. It will be integrated into the municipal project 'Cada dia llegim contes' (Every day we read stories), making literature a communication tool.
The initiative will be led by Abril Massana Navarro, a 15-year-old local resident with extensive knowledge of multiple languages and advanced studies in sign language, including training at Gallaudet University in Washington. Massana emphasized that the goal is to show that sign language is accessible to everyone, not just deaf individuals.
“"With this activity, we take another small step towards building a more inclusive Deltebre, bringing sign language closer to the citizens and providing tools to help us eliminate barriers."
The Mayor of Deltebre, Lluís Soler, thanked Abril Massana for driving this initiative, which is open to all residents. Massana, who speaks up to seven languages and has been studying sign language for three years, aims to dispel the notion that it is exclusively for deaf people.
This action is part of the inclusive policies that the Deltebre Town Council has been promoting. The Councillor for Childhood, Elderly, and Welfare, Vicky Albiol, highlighted that inclusion is a working methodology integrated into municipal services, rather than an isolated action.
