80-year-old woman drowns at L'Ampolla beach

The beach lacked a lifeguard service, and paramedics could not revive the woman, bringing the total to five deaths on Catalan beaches this summer.

An 80-year-old woman died this Saturday midday at Arquitecte beach in L'Ampolla, Baix Ebre, after being pulled from the water unconscious.

An 80-year-old woman lost her life this Saturday, June 27th, at midday while swimming at Arquitecte beach, located in L'Ampolla, Baix Ebre. The alert to the emergency number 112 was received at 13:12 hours, after several bathers reported having pulled an unconscious woman from the water.
The beach did not have a lifeguard service at the time of the incident. Three ground units from the System of Medical Emergencies (SEM) and five patrols from the Mossos d'Esquadra were dispatched to the scene and have taken charge of the judicial proceedings. Despite the resuscitation efforts performed by the paramedics, it was not possible to save the victim's life.
With this death, there have now been five fatalities on Catalan beaches since the official start of this summer's bathing season on June 15th. Following the incident, Civil Protection has reiterated the importance of exercising extreme caution at beaches, swimming pools, and inland waters.
The organization reminds the public that if they observe someone in difficulty in the water, they should immediately notify the lifeguard service or call 112 to ensure a swift intervention.
