The plenary of the Tortosa City Council will bring to approval the appointment of journalist Josep Bayerri Raga as the city's new official chronicler, a position that disappeared in the seventies.

The plenary of the Tortosa City Council will bring to approval this Monday the appointment of journalist Josep Bayerri Raga as the new City Chronicler. This initiative stems from a request by the board of the Terres de l'Ebre delegation of the Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya. The procedure has been developed over months, including the approval of a regulation agreed upon with the opposition groups.
The regulation governing the figure of the official chronicler of Tortosa was initially approved on January 5th and became final on March 23rd, with no objections. The honorary position will have a duration of five years, and the appointment will require a two-thirds majority of the municipal plenary, meaning 14 votes in favor.
The mayor, Mar Lleixà, recalled Tortosa's previous official chroniclers, from Ramon O’Callaghan in 1894 to Manuel Beguer (1959-1970), noting that the position was lost in the seventies. Cities like Barcelona, Tarragona, or Girona have maintained or recovered this figure. Lleixà emphasized that a city with over 2,000 years of history like Tortosa deserves to have a chronicler to disseminate its history, culture, and heritage.
Josep Bayerri Raga, born in 1944, is described as a veteran journalist, a benchmark for Tortosa's press, and a great connoisseur of the city. His career includes architecture, construction, urban planning, and education. He was a founder of the PSC in Terres de l'Ebre, an initiator of the Assemblea Democràtica del Baix Ebre, a councilor of the Tortosa City Council in 1983, and held positions in the UGT de Catalunya.
In the journalistic field, Bayerri founded and directed publications such as the weekly newspaper Ebre Informes (1978-1985). He was part of the editorial board of El Punt and promoted the Associació de Comunicadors de la Regió de l'Ebre. He currently collaborates with the Setmanari l’Ebre. His written work focuses on historical research, journalism, and socioeconomic studies.
The plenary also plans to approve the bullfighting program for the Reguers festivals (June 20th and 21st) and a motion from ERC supporting the implementation of the tram-train in Terres de l'Ebre.
