This initiative, promoted by the Tortosa City Council and executed by Equiro Equipament, SL, is based on a project by the Research and Innovation Group in Heritage Didactics, Comprehensive Museography and New Technologies (DIDPATRI) of the UB. The main goal is to enhance the city's defensive heritage and disseminate information about the conflicts of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the War of Separation and the War of the Spanish Succession.
DIDPATRI's museographic proposal modernizes the interpretation of historical heritage in open spaces, integrating physical elements, scenographic recreations, and digital resources accessible via mobile devices. This hybrid didactic museography has been designed to respectfully integrate with the existing historical architecture.
Key elements include metallic silhouettes of soldiers and civilians, two scenographies with artillery (a cannon and a mortar), models, a small theater in the Fortí d'Orleans, and nearly thirty lecterns with textual and iconographic information. The project also features hyperrealistic scenographies with sculptures by Mar H. Pongiluppi, depicting a 17th-century guard post and 18th-century military engineers.
One of the most innovative aspects is the incorporation of digital resources and artificial intelligence tools for heritage interpretation. The tour offers dozens of videos accessible from mobile phones, before, during, and after the visit, to enrich the visitor's experience and provide historical context about the fortifications.
The project coordination was led by Professor Rafael Sospedra, a DIDPATRI researcher and executive director of the initiative. UB emeritus professor F. Xavier Hernández Cardona highlighted that this proposal serves as a "general rehearsal" for a new museography applicable to open heritage spaces with moderate costs. The initiative received funding from the Next Generation EU funds.
This action is part of the University of Barcelona's ongoing work in applied heritage research and historical dissemination, with several recent interventions contributing to the recovery of defensive and archaeological heritage in the Terres de l'Ebre and other Mediterranean sites.
