The municipalities of Albons and Verges, located in the Baix Empordà region, were recognized in September 2025 for leading the recycling rate in Catalonia, surpassing 90% selective collection.

This milestone, announced on September 25, 2025, solidifies the Baix Empordà region as an example of waste management at the regional level. The key system behind this success is the door-to-door collection, implemented several years ago, which has allowed for the maximization of fraction separation and drastically reduced landfill waste.

"This result demonstrates the civic commitment of our residents and the validity of the door-to-door model. It is a collective effort that places us at the forefront of sustainability."

The average recycling rate in Catalonia stands at around 45%, which underscores the significant difference achieved by Albons and Verges, who exceed 90%. The Baix Empordà Regional Council highlighted the need to extend these successful models to other localities in the region to meet European targets.
