The Escoles Velles Cultural Center in Begur officially reopened its doors on Monday, October 16th, following an extensive interior renovation that has modernized and adapted the facility.

The institutional event, promoted by the Culture Area of the Begur City Council, featured speeches from the mayor Maite Selva and the Councilor for Culture, Jordi González, who highlighted the importance of adequate cultural spaces for the municipality. A commemorative plaque was installed on the main facade, and attendees were able to tour the new facilities.
The renovation has modernized the spaces, improving accessibility, sustainability, inclusion, and comfort, with the incorporation of new services. The building's interior has been dismantled and rebuilt, with works partially funded by the Next Generation Funds for energy efficiency (insulation, solar panels, biomass boiler) and with subsidies from the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya and own funds for accessibility (ramp, adapted restrooms, automatic doors).
Municipal funding covered renovations in painting, signage, lighting, and flooring, and the creation of the Espai BacanArt for temporary exhibitions. The Interpretation Center features a new scent display and resources, along with a line of official products designed by Anna Grimal. The Municipal Library also unveils a new children's area.

“

"To firmly commit to culture is to commit to a better society. Culture is an essential asset and needs adequate facilities for citizens to create and enjoy it."

Maite Selva · Mayor of Begur
Mayor Maite Selva noted that the works took longer than initially planned, but a thoroughly executed comprehensive renovation was prioritized. The Escoles Velles have been operational since late August, ushering in a new era as an open and accessible cultural space for everyone.
