That triumph marked a turning point for Spanish handball, which had already won previous medals but never a major competition title. The final against Croatia, the reigning world and Olympic champions, held special significance. The victory cemented that generation as one of the most outstanding.
In Palafrugell, the achievement was met with great pride. The Revista de Palafrugell dedicated its cover and an extensive feature to the player, introducing him as "the son of the Rocas carpentry shop". His career path from the Club Handbol Garbí to the elite was highlighted, including stints at clubs like Granollers, Valladolid, and Portland San Antonio.
Born on June 16, 1982, Rocas began at Garbí under the guidance of his first coach, Josep Maria Mora. The leap to professionalism came with Valladolid, where he signed his first contract in the top division, admitting he had to prioritize sport over his studies.
At 21, he established himself at Portland San Antonio, one of the major clubs in the Asobal League. Before the World Championship, he had already won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2004 and was recognized as the top scorer and best player of the 2003-2004 season.
His debut with the senior national team was recent, on December 28, 2004, against Russia. Just over a month later, he was a world champion, accumulating 14 caps for the senior team and numerous appearances for junior categories.
The world title confirmed Rocas as an established athlete, not just a promising talent. He himself described the feat as a crucial boost for Spanish handball, which could now claim the championship title.
His return to Palafrugell was marked by professional commitments and official receptions, including one from the Pamplona City Council and the royal family. The Palafrugell council also prepared an event to congratulate him.
Rocas's story illustrates the reality of elite sports: talent combined with sacrifice, the support of coaches, and personal renunciation to achieve excellence.
The 2005 World Championship was Albert Rocas's first major international peak and a historic moment for Palafrugell and Spanish handball, demonstrating that a career started at a local club could reach the highest level.
