The Palafrugell Giant Group has located documents in the Municipal Archive confirming the existence of giants and 'nanos' (dwarfs) in Llafranc in 1904, coinciding with the Santa Rosa festivities. This discovery stems from the research of Miquel Muñiz, the group's artistic coordinator.
Muñiz, initially focused on Palafrugell's giants, expanded his research to the surrounding areas and found chronicles from the 1904 Santa Rosa festivities describing a 'triumphal procession of the Llafranc Giants'. After verifying they were not rented figures, he confirmed they were unique to the coastal town.
The chronicles detail the participation of the giants and 'nanos' in the festive events of August 29 and 30, 1904, accompanied by the piper Xicu Casademont i Pla. Although no photographs or names of the original giants are available, descriptions refer to them as 'beautiful and admired characters'.
“"There are enough proofs to say that Llafranc had giants."
The reconstruction of the figures will be undertaken by artist Clara Anglada from the Aglà workshop in Cassà de la Selva. The new figures will recreate the giants based on historical information, with the documented 'nanos' to be incorporated later.
The first giantess will be unveiled on Sunday, August 30, coinciding with Santa Rosa, with a reveal at Cipsela promenade followed by a procession to Llafranc church. A new dance for giants, composed by Monti Galdon, will premiere. In the afternoon, another procession will take place with the giants and 'grallers' (bagpipers) from Palafrugell.
The remaining giants will be presented next year. The management of this revived tradition will fall to the Palafrugell Giant Group, with collaboration from the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government) and the Association of Friends and Neighbors of Llafranc.
