The infrastructure, managed by the Consorci d'Aigües Costa Brava Girona, suffered severe structural damage when the Aubi stream overflowed, flooding the plant's electrical systems and machinery. After five months of intensive work, the goal is to ensure the sanitation of wastewater for the municipalities of Palamós, Calonge, Palafrugell, and part of Begur before the peak season begins.
The 3.6 million euro investment, funded by the Agència Catalana de l'Aigua, has allowed for the recovery of the primary settlers. This improvement reduces the pollutant load by 40%, and it is expected that with the second phase of works in June, a 95% efficiency in suspended matter removal will be achieved.
“"Repairing the treatment plant before the summer season was key due to its size; it is a strategic infrastructure in the sanitation system of the Baix Empordà."
In parallel, work is underway to repair the submarine outfall located in the area of platja del Castell. A custom-made part ordered from Denmark will arrive next month to complete the final restoration of the conduit, thus ensuring the protection of nearby natural spaces such as the illes Formigues.
