The commemoration, taking place in 2027, recalls the first assembly held in Toluges (Roussillon) on May 16, 1027, promoted by Bishop Oliba. These assemblies are considered a significant precedent in the formation of the Corts Catalanes and the parliamentary institution in Catalonia, as well as one of the earliest expressions of parliamentarism in Europe.
The Peace of God movement and the subsequent Truce of God emerged between the late 10th and early 11th centuries to protect vulnerable sectors and limit feudal violence. Bishop Oliba, abbot of Ripoll and Cuixà, played a key role in this process, promoting the limitation of violence and establishing collective norms and guarantees.
The City Council believes the Millenary is an opportunity to advocate for values such as peace, dialogue, mediation, and the defense of human rights, which remain relevant today. The manifesto highlights the importance of these early forms of collective deliberation as antecedents of the Catalan institutional tradition.
With this adherence, Torroella de Montgrí joins a national commemoration that vindicates the role of institutions, dialogue, and the culture of pacts. The council commits to promoting commemorative events and activities in the municipality.
