The deadline for completing the train track underpass through Sant Feliu de Llobregat has been extended, with completion not expected before the first quarter of 2027. This was announced by Iñaki Pont, head of construction for the Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (Adif), the entity responsible for the project's execution and funding. Once the works are finished, the section will require inspection by the Agencia de Seguridad Ferroviaria, a process that could take around four months.
This postponement represents a delay compared to the initially presented timelines, which aimed for completion by the end of 2025 and for trains to run through the underpassed section with the new underground station before the end of 2026. The underpass project has been a long-standing demand from the capital of Baix Llobregat for decades.
The project, described as the "crown jewel" of the Rodalies plan by Àngel Contreras, head of Adif's Eastern zone, includes the creation of an underground railway tunnel, a new underground station, and the redevelopment of the surrounding area. The total investment amounts to 169 million euros.
The Minister of Territory of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Sílvia Paneque, highlighted that the work will promote "intermodality with buses and the TRAM to Molins de Rei", expanding the tram service in the city and paving the way for future connections. She reiterated that improving Rodalies is a priority for the Government.
The urban transformation brought about by the underpass has been compared in importance for Sant Feliu de Llobregat to the Olympic Games for Barcelona. According to the mayor, Lourdes Borrell, the project will include social housing (55%), new facilities such as the CAP Rambla with emergency services, the expansion of the swimming pool complex and the Juan Carlos Navarro pavilion, as well as 3,000 square meters of green space.
