This distinction certifies that decisions regarding blood transfusions are made following rigorous clinical criteria, ensuring maximum benefit for patients and promoting responsible use of this valuable and limited healthcare resource. The recognition highlights the work of the professionals in the Hematology and Hemotherapy unit and their commitment to scientific evidence and patient safety.
This achievement places the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu among Catalonia's reference centers in this field, after meeting the quality thresholds set by the Xarxa Essencial (Essential Network), an AQuAS initiative promoting safer, evidence-based healthcare.
The Xarxa Essencial evaluates the appropriateness of blood transfusions based on two main criteria: performing them initially with a single unit of red blood cells whenever possible, and ensuring that transfusions are indicated for patients with hemoglobin levels consistent with established clinical criteria. Approximately 235,000 units of red blood cells are transfused annually in Catalonia.
