The Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Núria Parlon, participated on Monday in the Local Security Board of Calafell, where she announced the government's commitment to the construction of a new Mossos d'Esquadra police station on the Penedès coast. This infrastructure is a long-standing demand from the municipalities of Calafell and Cunit.
Parlon explained that the new district police station, similar to the one in Torredembarra, is included in the strategic plan of the Mossos d'Esquadra scheduled for September. Once approved, the necessary resources will be allocated to initiate the project, with the aim of launching it before the end of the term. "It would be desirable to have a security resource in an area that is growing and should grow positively," stated the minister.
Following the approval of the police plan, urban planning procedures will begin. Both the Generalitat and the Calafell City Council have committed to speeding up the process, seeking available land as soon as possible to plan and begin construction. The location, yet to be fully specified, would be on a municipal plot near Catalunya Avenue in Segur de Calafell, a key area close to Cunit.
The mayor of Calafell, Ramon Ferré, expressed his satisfaction with the announcement, highlighting the crime problem in areas such as Catalunya Avenue and Baixador street. He pointed out the actions of groups of young people, many of them minors, who generate insecurity and conflicts, as well as cases related to drugs. According to the mayor, two groups totaling about 18 youths have been identified and are involved in offenses and conflicts with pedestrians.
Ferré also mentioned an incident that occurred the previous weekend involving the use of a bladed weapon, and assured that the city council will take "forceful measures" against detected illegal activities.
Regarding the analysis of crime in the municipality, both the minister and the mayor positively assessed the work of the security forces, indicating a "stable trend" in the data. Parlon highlighted a 1% increase in crime resolution and arrests, and a decrease in violent robberies in public spaces. However, she pointed out the need to address behaviors that mix incivility and crime on Catalunya Avenue and Monturiol street, for which security forces will coordinate.
This coordination will be reinforced during the summer season, coinciding with the increase in visitors to the area.
