The city of Barcelona has expanded its support network for victims of gender-based violence with the inauguration of a second Attention, Recovery, and Welcome Service (SARA) facility. This new center, located at Carrer Muntaner, 200, joins the service already operating on Carrer Marie Curie, aiming to improve territorial coverage and streamline specialized assistance for women, children, and adolescents affected by gender-based violence.
This expansion is part of the Barcelona government's measure for the eradication of gender-based violence (2025-2030), which seeks a more integrated and accessible municipal care model. The doubling of SARA, along with the revision of the Municipal Protocol for Action in Gender-Based Violence and the expansion of residential resources, are key components of this strategy.
In 2025, the SARA service assisted 1,280 individuals, including 903 women and 342 children and adolescents. The residential accommodation program for women and children has grown by over 50% in four years, now offering 284 places.
The new SARA Muntaner facility, located in L'Eixample, will serve the districts of Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, and Sant Martí. The Marie Curie center will continue to serve the districts of Nou Barris, Horta-Guinardó, and Sant Andreu, and will also handle urgent cases from 9 AM to 1 PM, Monday to Friday.
The Muntaner premises, spanning nearly 1000 m², involved an investment of approximately 2 million euros and were designed to create a more personal, welcoming environment focused on the needs of victims, with distinct spaces for children and adolescents.
Currently, the SARA service employs 43 professionals, with an additional 16 new hires (social workers, psychologists, educators, legal experts, and administrative staff) to strengthen the multidisciplinary teams.
