The Centre de Normalització Lingüística de Barcelona (CNL) will add 5,000 new places for Catalan language learning and incorporate 23 teachers starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, following a stable funding agreement.

This expansion is the result of an agreement signed between the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya, which will guarantee permanent and stable funding for the consortium. The measure responds to the growing demand for Catalan courses in the Catalan capital, which until now exceeded the available supply.
The collaboration between both administrations will result in an increase in municipal contributions, rising from 1.9 to 3.1 million euros annually. This investment will be integrated into the city's ordinary contribution, aiming to ensure that the course offerings can grow at the same pace as citizen demand and reduce waiting lists.
The current agreement represents an evolution of an emergency plan initiated in March 2025, which already allowed for the hiring of 13 permanent and 10 temporary teachers, as well as the expansion of courses in districts with specific needs such as Ciutat Vella, Sant Martí, and Nou Barris. That intervention also included a line of subsidies for 44 local entities, facilitating the provision of courses with more flexible schedules.
This commitment is part of a broader national strategy that aims to reach 150,000 places for teaching and accreditation of Catalan levels A1 and A2 by the 2026-2027 academic year across the country. This figure represents an increase of 50,000 places compared to the current offering and seeks to address needs arising, among other factors, from extraordinary regularization processes for foreign nationals.
