The Can Basté civic center, housed in the old 18th-century farmhouse in the Nou Barris district of Barcelona, commemorates three decades of continuous activity as a specialized reference point for photography.

The Can Basté farmhouse, originally dedicated to vineyard cultivation, was transformed into a civic center following neighborhood demands in the 1990s. It is currently a civically managed facility, ensuring its deep roots in the Turó de la Peira neighborhood, according to Sergi Conesa, coordinator of the Photographic Space.

"Photography, on the one hand, sought avenues for institutionalization and, on the other, its popularization allowed many people in the neighborhood and the city to start as amateurs. To do this, it needed training and exhibition spaces like those offered by Can Basté."

This specialization in photography was a deliberate commitment from the outset, coinciding with a moment of artistic effervescence in the city. The focus on figures like Jesús Micó helped shape a quality program open to emerging generations in the sector.
Over these three decades, Can Basté has promoted its own projects such as the Fòrum Fotogràfic de Can Basté, Vist a Barcelona, and the Premi Revela, and has established recent collaborations with Art Photo Barcelona and the Festival Lumínic, consolidating its position in the city's cultural circuit.

"As a public facility in the Turó de la Peira neighborhood, it is vitally important to remember how and why this space was born. At the same time, it is essential to focus on the Nou Barris district and the city of Barcelona, to find convergences and develop joint paths with all entities that value visual culture and specifically champion photography."
