Rehabilitation and maintenance works on the Vallcarca viaduct, an emblematic infrastructure in Barcelona's Gràcia district built in 1923, have commenced with a budget of 1.3 million euros and an estimated duration of five months.

The main objective of this action is to improve the durability, structural safety, and overall appearance of the viaduct, correcting detected pathologies to prevent deterioration caused by the passage of time and atmospheric agents. This intervention is part of the district's Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI) for 2026.
The tasks will include the repair and consolidation of deteriorated concrete areas, treatment of exposed reinforcement, sealing of cracks, and repair of masonry elements. The surfaces will also be cleaned, spontaneous vegetation removed, and graffiti eliminated to enhance the overall appearance. Protection systems such as waterproofing treatments and anti-carbonation coatings will be applied for future conservation.
The preventive nature of the intervention will not involve modifications to the viaduct's configuration or operation, aiming instead to extend its service life. The works have been planned to minimize disruptions to traffic and daily life in the neighborhood, with traffic restrictions being occasional, mainly during nighttime hours.
The viaduct, which has a heritage protection level C, celebrated its centenary in 2023. It was officially inaugurated in March 1923, representing a significant civil engineering work by architect Miquel Pasqual Tintorer, pioneering the use of reinforced concrete with iron.
