The CSIC and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) have signed an agreement to promote joint research and innovation projects at mountain and snow resorts, primarily through the Mountain and Snow Innovation Center in Catalonia (CIMneu).

The agreement foresees the development of initiatives focused on challenges such as climate change adaptation, sustainability, natural resource management, and the transformation of mountain facilities. This framework of cooperation will facilitate the exchange of technical, scientific, and technological information, as well as the creation of working groups and studies.
The Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) will be the participating CSIC center. This collaboration continues previous work between ICMAB-CSIC and FGC, including the development of a technology for producing snow more sustainably, with less water and energy.
The resorts of Vallter and Vall de Núria, managed by FGC under the Pirineu365 brand, will become spaces for pilot projects and living lab experiments, validating new solutions for the sustainable management of mountain environments.
The CIMneu, based in Camprodon, will use the Vall de Núria and Vallter resorts as a testing ground. The center, located in the modernist building of Can Roig, will focus on innovation related to snow, mountain decarbonization, and the application of advanced technologies, with the participation of researchers, students, and emerging companies from the UPC.
One of the notable previous innovations is a snow-making technology led by ICMAB researcher Albert Verdaguer, which uses natural minerals to improve efficiency and reduce water and energy consumption.
