A roundtable held on Wednesday, May 10, brought together various local communication experts to discuss the current status and future challenges of proximity journalism in Catalonia.

The meeting was organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the publication and was moderated by Neus Bonet, president of Ràdio Associació de Catalunya. Participants included Jordi Ubach, from Pallars Digital; Carme Rocamora, from Jardí de Sant Gervasi i Sarrià; Vicenç Sanclemente, a journalist from Gràcia and promoter of Carrer Gran, and the director of the host weekly.
The debate focused on the disparity of environments where local press operates, contrasting the reality of globalized Barcelona, characterized by high population density and saturation of stimuli, with the Pallars regions, which have fewer inhabitants and greater territorial space.
The speakers agreed on the vital importance of the local press, as residents continue to show a genuine interest in knowing the events happening in their immediate surroundings. This need for close information transforms local journalism into “proximity press.”
This proximity is defined not only by physical distance but by the sensory relationship established with readers, often driven by the shared goal of “building territory.” However, reflection was made on the long-term future, considering the need for adaptation to avoid becoming obsolete in a constantly changing media environment.
