Dr. Mar Tintoré Subirana is the new director of the Multiple Sclerosis Centre of Catalonia (Cemcat). The Cemcat Board of Directors has approved this appointment, succeeding Dr. Xavier Montalban. The Board includes Dr. Albert Salazar (president), Ms. Maria José Abella, Dr. Pilar Otermín, Dr. Roser Anglès, Dr. Xavier Montalban, and Mr. Agustí Bou.
With over thirty years of professional experience at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Dr. Tintoré also serves as head of section in the Neurology Department and, until now, was the head of clinical care at Cemcat. Academically, she is a professor at the University of Vic (UVic-UCC) and a collaborating professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
Dr. Tintoré is an internationally recognized leader. She served as president of ECTRIMS from 2022 to 2024 and co-chaired its congress in Barcelona in 2025, which gathered over ten thousand experts in multiple sclerosis. Currently, she is a member of the Clinical Trials Committee (ECTRIMS and NMSS) on diagnostic criteria, the board of the European Charcot Foundation, and president of the Scientific Advisory Board of EME (Esclerosis Múltiple España).
As a principal investigator at VHIR, Dr. Tintoré and other Cemcat members have been recognized as Highly Cited Authors (1% Clarivate Highly Cited Authors), with over 360 original and review scientific publications. Her research focuses on therapeutic safety (infections and vaccination), care for elderly patients and vulnerable populations, early prognostic factors, improving diagnostic criteria, women's health and family planning, and pediatric multiple sclerosis.
Cemcat, established in 2007 and part of the Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, is a joint management project between the Catalan Health Institute (ICS), CatSalut, and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FEM). It is among the top five reference centres globally for multiple sclerosis, annually attending over 5,000 patients (approximately 40% of those with MS in Catalonia) through a unique integrated model of care, research, and teaching, involving over 100 professionals.
