The arrival of good weather and increased outdoor activity have led to a rise in veterinary consultations for animals showing symptoms of having consumed narcotic substances. According to experts, dogs may ingest drug residues left in leisure areas or even contaminated feces, a risk that becomes more evident in environments near festivals or areas where people gather.
Warning signs are often immediate. Owners should be alert to abnormal movements, lethargy, disorientation, or vomiting after a walk. In severe cases, especially with substances like cocaine, the animal may require urgent care and fluid therapy to metabolize the toxins, while in mild situations, the process is usually resolved with clinical observation.
“"Generally, during the first few hours, if after going to the park the dog makes strange movements with its body, is sleepy, is uncomfortable, or falls to its side, we already suspect that it has eaten something it shouldn't have."
Given this situation, pet owners are calling for preventive measures from the Barcelona City Council. Among the proposals is the request to provide more public toilets in high-traffic areas such as Montjuïc, Ciutadella Park, or Joan Miró Park, to prevent human physiological needs from being carried out in spaces where animals have direct access.
