Barcelona City Council has unveiled a plan involving 24 construction projects and 18 paving operations set to disrupt city mobility throughout the summer, with significant interventions on main roads and public transport.

This summer, mobility in Barcelona will be affected by a total of 24 construction projects and 18 paving operations. The City Council has outlined the planned urban transformations, some of which are long-term reforms nearing their final stages. Notable among these are works on Balmes Street, between Plaça de Molina and Ronda de General Mitre; Meridiana Avenue, between Felip II and Fabra i Puig; the urbanization of Gran Via over the Glòries tunnel, including tram network improvements; and the redevelopment of La Rambla.
The redevelopment of La Rambla, a major focus of the current term, is scheduled for completion in February 2027. Prior to this, in September, the southbound lanes on the Raval side will be opened to traffic. During the summer, specifically between August 3rd and 16th, a closure will affect the Gothic side, with traffic diverted through the Raval or the adjacent Raval side carriageway.
Chronologically, the renovation of Balmes Street, between Plaça de Molina and Ronda de General Mitre, will be the first to conclude. Paving will commence on July 11th, with a complete traffic closure the following day. This project, initiated in autumn 2024, will finish in July with the final touches on sidewalks and service curbs.
The renovation of Meridiana Avenue, between Felip II and Fabra i Puig, is among those expected to cause the most disruption. Work is set to finish in autumn, with circulation maintained in both directions throughout the summer. Between July 27th and August 7th, paving will occur on the inbound lanes, followed by outbound lanes from August 7th to 14th. The subsequent phase, between Fabra i Puig and the Sarajevo Bridge, is currently in the study phase.
The covering works on the Ronda de Dalt, between Avinguda de Vallcarca and IES Vall d'Hebron, will also lead to disruptions. From July 19th to August 6th, there will be nighttime closures, with impacts on the side roads of Passeig de la Vall d'Hebron. Between August 3rd and 24th, the slow lane will be occupied for utility installations, leaving two lanes open per direction between access points 5 and 6. These works are expected to continue until the end of 2027.
The extension of the L8 line by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) between Plaça d'Espanya and Lesseps will bring new disruptions to Plaça d'Espanya and Gran Via. From June 25th to September 7th, the Besòs-bound half of the roundabout at Plaça d'Espanya will be reduced to three lanes. From July 6th to September 7th, two lanes will be reduced on the exit from the roundabout towards Gran Via. Additionally, Llança Street will be closed from June 25th to August 28th for auxiliary construction tasks.
Throughout the summer, approximately 100,000 square meters of road surface will be paved across the city. Some of the most significant paving projects will take place on Santaló Street, Plaça de Cerdà, Moianès Street, Avinguda de Can Marcet, the Vidal i Barraquer and Rembrandt axis, Avinguda de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat, Passeig de Maragall, Gran Via (between Marina and Meridiana), and Mallorca Street.
As is customary, there will be subway line closures for maintenance. The L1 line will experience interruptions between Plaça de Sants and Florida (July 17th - August 28th) for track renewal. The section of the L9/L10 Nord line between Sagrera and Onze de Setembre will be closed from June 25th to August 30th, extending to Bon Pastor until September 6th.
The Verdaguer station (L4) will close its main entrance from July 6th to August 30th for lobby renovations, although trains will continue to run normally. The connecting corridor between the L1 and L3 lines at Catalunya station will also be closed from July 6th to September 7th. At Plaça de Sants (L5), the installation of new elevators will necessitate the closure of the Llobregat-bound direction of Sants Street between July 13th and August 21st.
Urbanization works on Gran Via and improvements to the TRAM network will disrupt lines T4, T5, and T6 between July 3rd and September 13th, 2026. Special bus services will be implemented as alternatives. Furthermore, the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat service between Gràcia and Sarrià will be suspended from August 11th to 23rd for track renewal, with a replacement road service. The Vallvidrera funicular will also be closed from July 27th to August 28th for infrastructure review.
