Barcelona City Council has reached a historic agreement with the Ministry of Finance for the free transfer of 5.2 kilometers of coastal land, spanning from Barceloneta to the Parc del Fòrum esplanade.

This transfer involves the handover of 62.8 hectares of Barcelona's coast, including the maritime front, the Olympic zone, the Fòrum's marine platform, and the adjacent bathing area. The agreement modifies the 2009 demarcation of the maritime-terrestrial zone and grants the City Council exclusive ownership of over half of the coastline, with the commitment that these areas will not be used for profit-generating activities. The council will assume the maintenance and conservation of this land.
The 62.8 hectares ceded include approximately 354,000 m2 designated for parks and green spaces, 206,500 m2 for roads, and about 68,200 m2 for public facilities. However, areas such as the shopping center, nightclubs, and offices of the State Meteorological Agency will remain under state ownership.

"It is a historic agreement that allows us to recover full domain and ownership of over 60 hectares of coastline."

Jaume Collboni · Mayor of Barcelona
Mayor Jaume Collboni and the Minister of Finance, Arcadi España, have celebrated the agreement, the result of 20 years of negotiations. Collboni highlighted that the transfer will facilitate projects for beach maintenance, green spaces, and climate adaptation, with an estimated investment of 100 million euros. The minister, for his part, positively assessed the understanding between administrations for the city's benefit.
