The Barcelona City Council plenary session has initially approved the incorporation of Taser guns for the Guardia Urbana, a measure that could be operational by mid-2027.

The proposal, previously rejected a year ago, passed thanks to the support of the PP and Junts, opening the door for the tender process of these electroshock weapons. The decision follows a year of debate and comes amid an increase in criminal activities in the city.
The new police regulation, which includes the use of Tasers, will be debated in the Security commission in July and will have its final vote in the October plenary. Once approved, the public tender to acquire the weapons can commence, with the expectation that they will be available by mid-2027.

"If nothing prevents it, the weapons could be available by mid-2027."

The PP municipal group, through its president Daniel Sirera, has called for all street units to be equipped with these devices, estimating that around 150 units would be necessary. Barcelona en Comú and Esquerra Republicana have voted against the proposal.
The measure had been previously rejected by Junts, who cited a lack of dialogue with police unions. Now, with the change in stance, its implementation is possible, although the exact number of weapons to be acquired is yet to be determined.
