David Bondia will continue as Ombudsman of Barcelona for a second term, the maximum allowed by the Municipal Charter. His appointment was supported by Junts, PSC, BComú, and ERC, with the PP abstaining and VOX voting against, thus surpassing the required qualified majority.
The Ombudsman's Office of Barcelona is responsible for defending the fundamental rights and public liberties of citizens and oversees the actions of the municipal administration. Bondia succeeded Maria Assumpció Vilà in the role in 2021.
The citizen participation process, organized through the Decidim.Barcelona platform, concluded on June 30 with Bondia receiving support from 76% of citizens and 81% of entities.
David Bondia, a full professor of public international law at the University of Barcelona (UB), also chairs the Global Alliance of Local Ombudspersons (AGOL) and has held significant positions in various national and international human rights organizations.
