The Concilia program, offering free, on-demand childcare for children aged 1 to 12, has added three new locations across the city. Two of these new spaces, situated in the neighborhoods of Poble-sec (Sants-Montjuïc district) and Roquetes (Nou Barris district), are already operational. The third facility, in Barceloneta (Ciutat Vella district), is expected to open in September, following renovations to the children's school it will house.
With this expansion, the municipal service now operates 15 facilities spread throughout various neighborhoods. The initiative, launched in 2020 as a pilot project, has become a key tool in supporting families, particularly in areas identified as having the greatest need. Its primary goal is to alleviate the burden of caregiving tasks, often falling on women, thereby helping to reduce "time poverty".
For 2026, the program's budget has been increased to 1.67 million euros, a rise of 350,000 euros from the previous year. The service's coordination now falls under the Directorate of Feminisms, Gender Transversality, and LGTBI.
Between September 2025 and April 2026, the 12 existing facilities provided 16,380 childcare services, attending to 1,480 children from 1,310 user families. Notably, 37% of the children come from single-parent families, and nearly six out of ten lack family or community support networks.
Concilia spaces are open Monday to Saturday, offering afternoon services on weekdays and full-day care on Saturdays. The program prioritizes access for single-parent families, survivors of gender-based violence, and households without support networks. Registration can be completed in person, online, or via referral from social services, and accommodates both one-time and recurring bookings, as well as urgent situations.
Beyond childcare, Concilia provides an educational program focused on co-education, participation, interculturality, emotional education, sustainability, and health. Activities are tailored to different age groups, recognizing play as an essential tool for development and learning. The service also includes school pick-up and has been enhanced with five additional professionals to support children with specific educational needs.
The Madres Mentoras project continues to foster family participation and the creation of support networks. Concilia also helps women access training and job opportunities, promoting their personal well-being and the overall quality of family life.
