The arrival of the Tour de France in Catalonia, with its starting point in Barcelona, is generating high expectations within the city's hotel sector, which anticipates near-full occupancy. Tourist apartments are also expecting significant demand, with projections exceeding 80% occupancy during the competition.
This international sporting event follows a busy June for the city, marked by other major events such as the Primavera Sound festival, the Sónar festival, and the Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Montmeló Circuit. PIMEC highlights that the Tour's presence represents a key opportunity to promote cycling tourism in Barcelona and throughout Catalonia, forecasting a positive economic impact that will extend to retail and hospitality.
Some hotel establishments are already experiencing demand that brings them close to one hundred percent bookings. Roger Grau, director of the NH hotel on Catalunya's main avenue, explains that reservations for the race days are very high, leading to an increase in prices. Although no bookings directly linked to cycling teams have been detected, a general rise in demand is observed. The tourist profile remains consistent, with 10-15% of visitors being from within Spain and the majority coming from the United States and Northern Europe.
For its part, Marian Muro, general director of the tourist apartment association Apartur, indicates that an occupancy rate of around 80% is expected for tourist apartments during the Tour. Muro views the cycling event positively, considering it a fundamental element in consolidating Barcelona's global image.
Regarding mobility, PIMEC does not foresee issues with the July holiday travel rush, as the Tour does not coincide with the usual mass departures. However, Daniel Brasé, vice-president of PIMEC's Tourism sector, warns that the competition's organization will involve traffic restrictions hours before the cyclists pass, and recommends planning travel in advance. Sunday, July 5th, is expected to be the day with the most significant road disruptions, coinciding with the final stage and usual trips to the beaches.
