On Saturday, October 3rd, the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) hosted its inaugural Family Open Day, an event that allowed over 150 family members of its professionals to gain close insight into the institution's facilities and research work.

The event featured guided tours of laboratories from various research groups, as well as support and structure units within VHIR. At the Central Building, the Pneumology group conducted demonstrations on the effects of air pollution and explained the functioning of RT-qPCR. The Cardiovascular Diseases group showcased histological samples under a microscope to illustrate research into fibrosis, arrhythmias, and heart inflammation. Professionals from the Peripheral Nervous System group detailed sample analysis for identifying new biomarkers for neuromuscular diseases.
The IT Unit presented the management of VHIR's technological infrastructure, ensuring the proper operation of IT equipment, error detection, and the installation of new systems. In the Collserola Building, the Clinical Biochemistry, Drug Delivery and Therapy group demonstrated the stages of biomedical research, from the synthesis of therapeutic extracellular vesicles to preclinical evaluation. The Cancer and Childhood Hematological Diseases group highlighted the importance of clinical trials and patient participation in achieving more precise and safer treatments.
The day also included workshops designed to introduce science to children. The Biomedical Research in Urology group organized the escape room 'Mission Resistance. The case of the invincible tumor,' while the Diabetes and Metabolism group offered a science bingo titled 'Understanding Diabetes' to explain basic concepts about the disease and its prevention.
