The metro network of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has experienced a 34% reduction in recorded criminal incidents during the first half of 2026. Compared to the same period in 2025, when 8,388 criminal acts were registered, this year saw 5,528 cases between January and June.
These figures consolidate a downward trend observed since 2019, attributed to TMB's prevention measures and collaboration with security forces.
TMB President Laia Bonet highlighted that "the data shows that the metro is a safer space today than a few years ago." She noted that despite the increase in demand, crimes continue to fall, thanks to the collaboration between TMB and security forces, as well as the reinforcement of security and video surveillance systems.
The metro network is equipped with over 11,000 cameras installed in both stations and trains. These devices not only aid in resolving complaints but also have a significant deterrent effect and are crucial for collaborating with the Mossos d'Esquadra and other security forces. Images are received at the Metro Control Centre and the Centre for Security and Civil Protection.
The cameras allow for live viewing when a user activates the SOS or information button. Recorded footage is stored and can be reviewed by police authorities upon request.
The primary objective is to ensure the safety of users, staff, and facilities. Last year, the Barcelona Metro network recorded over 480 million validations. Currently, more than 800 private security agents are enhancing safety across the network.
