Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, known for his career as a lawyer, university professor, and former dean of the Il·lustre Col·legi de l’Advocacia de Barcelona, as well as a former deputy, has stepped forward to compete in Junts' primaries to select the candidate for the mayoralty of Barcelona. The decision follows consultations with the party and key figures, including president Carles Puigdemont, who had previously offered him the leadership of the candidacy in 2019.
Alonso-Cuevillas stated that his participation in these primaries, the most plural in the party's history, represents an opportunity to showcase Junts' internal talent and its democratic nature, where the membership chooses the candidates. He highlighted that this competition can capture media attention during the internal campaign.
Regarding the different visions for the city and party strategies among the four candidates, Alonso-Cuevillas quoted Junts' Secretary General, Jordi Turull, emphasizing that 'we are called Junts, not the same,' defending the plurality of nuances as a strength of the movement. He noted that the members' decision should be based on which candidate can achieve better electoral results to challenge Jaume Collboni for the mayoralty.
The candidate is firm in his stance against pacts with Jaume Collboni, Barcelona en Comú, or the PP. He believes an understanding with Esquerra Republicana could be possible, provided it aligns with Junts' city model. His primary goal is to be the most voted list to prevent pacts that could thwart his investiture, as occurred with Xavier Trias and Ernest Maragall previously.
Alonso-Cuevillas advocates for his management and leadership experience, gained as a deputy in the Parliament and Congress, and as dean of the Bar Association, as assets to attract transversal votes and defend Barcelona. He assured that, should he not win the primaries, his commitment is to defend the city for as many years as necessary, regardless of whether he leads the candidacy.
