A select group of about twenty youths from Tarragona, aged between 12 and 16, will experience Pope Leo XIV's visit to Barcelona up close. They will have the opportunity to be on the pitch of the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, in the so-called 'front row', during the prayer vigil on June 9th. This privileged position is not a matter of luck, but a reward for their volunteer work in activities organized by the Archdiocese of Tarragona.
Among the fortunate are young people like Nollver Hernández, Milla Nassikanova, Aina Torrents, and Roi Bonet, who, despite not strictly identifying as Catholic (some agnostic or Orthodox Christian), recognize the significance of the event. "To be able to see the Pope, this doesn't happen every day, it will be a unique experience," they explain, showing openness to reconsidering their beliefs in the pontiff's presence.
Their presence on the stadium pitch is part of a broader initiative involving youths from other Catalan dioceses. The Tarragona delegation actively collaborated in organizing the Diocesan Gathering, participating in support and assistance roles. Sister Isabel Górriz, from the Youth Delegation of the Archdiocese, highlighted that the Pope's visit is "the reward they deserved" for their dedication.
The youths also positively assessed Pope Leo XIV's connection with social media and the internet, although they note a more conservative stance than his predecessor, Francis, particularly on issues related to the LGBTI+ community. They applauded his first encyclical on artificial intelligence, considering his opinion to carry significant global weight.
In addition to the event at Montjuïc, another 300 individuals from Tarragona will attend the vigil from the stands. The following day, June 10th, another youth delegation will participate in an excursion to Montserrat to pray the Rosary before the Moreneta, an experience they anticipate will be "very beautiful".
